EMINEM은 1972년 10월 17일 미주리주의 Kansas City 에서 태어난 Marshall Bruce Mathers 3세(본명)는 생후 6개월
자신을 떠난 아버지 없이 어린 시절을 외롭게 자라났다. 그의 음악에는 어머니와 아버지에 대한 분노가 실려있다.

그는 12살때 디트로이트 주 동부의 한 가난한 마을로 이사를 했고 2~3달에 한번꼴로 학교를 옮겨 다녀, 친구 사귀는 일이 쉽지 못했고 학창시절을 불우하게 보낸다. 랩의 열혈한 팬이었던 그는 학창시절 점심시간에 런치룸에서 친구들과 랩 배틀을 즐기는 일이 그의 삶에 유일한 즐거움 이었다.

14살때 부터 랩에 진지함을 느끼기 시작한 Marshall 은 17살때 자신의 이름을 Marshall Mathers 의 앞글자에서 딴
M & M 이라 칭했으며, 후에 이 이름이 그 유명한 Eminem 이 되었다. 그는 백인 이라는 이유로 다른 많은 흑인들에게 차별을 당했고 그의 음악에서 이런 설움과 분노를 찾아 볼수 있다. 그는 라디오 쇼 등에서 랩배틀이나 프리스타일 등을 하며 자신의 존재를 서서히 알리기 시작한다. EMINEM은 14살의 나이로 Soul Intent라는 그룹의 일원으로 데뷔한 에미넴은 96년 [Infinite]라는 앨범으로 솔로데뷔를 한다. 그의 메이저 데뷔 앨범인 Infinite를 발표 했으나 1000장도 팔지 못한 실패작으로 남아버렸다.

그 후 AFTERMATH의 창시자 이자 미국에서 가장 권위있는 흑인 프로듀서 중 한명인 DR.DRE는 EMINEM이 프리스타일 대회에서 두각을 나타내 방송 출연중 랩을 하는것을 듣게 되고 EMINEM과 만남을 가진후 계약까지 성사되어 EMINEM은 DR.DRE을 통해 정식데뷔하며 스타덤 반열에 오르게된다.
