Hotel California - Eagles (이글스) 뮤직비디오

이글스(Eagles)는 린다 론스타트(Linda Ronstadt)의 백업 밴드(반주 악단)로 1970년 그녀의 프로듀서였던 John Boylan에 의해 결성되어졌다.

백업 밴드로 활동하면서 실력을 쌓아온 이글스의 멤버 들(드럼: Don Henry, 기타: Glenn Frey, Bernie Leadon,
베이스: Randy Meisner)은 1972년 자신들의 데뷔 앨범《Eagles》를 발표하여 백업 밴드 출신으로서 골드 앨범을 달성하는 큰 성공을 거두게 된다.

컨츄리 음악이라는 자신들의 음악 기반을 고수하면서 1973년 발표한 두 번째 앨범 《Desperado》역시 골드 앨범을 만들어낸 이들은 미국의 음악 스타일을 대표해 줄 수 있는 그들의 사운드와 미국이라는 나라를 소재로 삼은 노랫말을 통해 대중에게 자신들의 존재를 확고히 인식시키는 데 성공하게 된다.

이런 과정 속에서 이들은 1974년 세 번째 앨범 《On the Border》를 발표하여 히트를 기록하게 되었고 세 번째 앨범 발매 직후부터 이들은 Don Felder라는 기타리스트를 영입하면서 트리플 기타 체제의 5인 밴드를 만들게 된다. 기타 사운드가 좀 더 강해지면서 록 밴드로서의 방향전환을 시도하게 되는 이들은 1975년 《One of These Night》에서 대 성공을 거두게 된다.

이듬해 기타리스트 Berine Leadon이 그룹을 탈퇴하고 그 자리에 James Gang에서 활약하던 Joe Walsh가 들어오게 된다. 그의 가세는 그룹의 사운드에 엄청난 힘을 실어주게 되는데 조 월시의 탁월한 기타 실력 덕분에 사운드를 좀 더 록 쪽으로 변화시켜 그들의 음악을 미국의 사운드를 대표하는 컨츄리 록이라는 이름으로 규정짓게 한다.

1976년 세 대의 기타가 환상적인 조화를 이루어내며 이들의 최대 역작을 완성하는데 바로 《Hotel California》였다. 이 앨범에서 그들은 한 차원 성숙해진 자신들의 음악성과 예술성을 과시했다. 《Hotel California》는 당시 제 20회 그래미상에서 올해의 레코드상을 수상했으며 「New Kids In Town」, 「Hotel California」의 차트 1위곡을 만들어내었고, 앨범은 8주간 차트 정상을 지켰으며, 107주간 차트 정상에 머무르면서 900만장이 팔려나갔다. 이 앨범을 통해 이글즈는 1970년대 가장 큰 상업적 성공을 거둔 밴드로 이름지워져 있기도 하다.

하지만 이 엄청난 대중적 성공은 각 멤버들에게 큰 부담을 주게 되었고, 또 먼저 그룹을 떠난 Berine Leandon이 솔로로 활동을 시작하면서 멤버들은 솔로 활동에 호감을 보이기 시작한다. 몇 곡의 히트곡을 더 내놓지만 결국 1982년 미국 사운드를 대표하던 이글즈는 해체되고 만다. 해체 이후 그룹의 리더였던 Don Henry는 솔로로 성공을 거두기도 하였다.

이후 10년이 넘게 따로 활동하던 이들은 1994년 《Hell Freezes Over》를 발표하며 재 결합을 선언한다. 라이브 앨범으로 만들어진 이 재결합 앨범은 어쿠스틱한 연주가 또다른 매력을 발하며 차트 정상을 차지하게 된다. 앨범에 수록되어 있는 「Hotel California」와 「Desperado」는 국내에서도 큰 성공을 거두면서 통기타 넘버로 많은 사랑을 받았었다.
